Roof tanks in Gurugram: what to know
Whose tank is it? In a high-rise society on Golf Course Extension Road or Dwarka Expressway, the terrace tanks belong to the society and the RWA books them (Society & Commercial Water Tank Cleaning in Gurugram). In plotted Gurugram, the tank is yours. Villas in the DLF phases, South City, Nirvana Country and Malibu Town usually carry two or three tanks on the roof, fed by a motor from the sump. Since 2019, Haryana's stilt-plus-four rules have also let many plots be rebuilt as up to four floors over stilt parking, each floor sold separately, so one terrace may hold a tank for every owner and nobody in particular is in charge of cleaning them.
A Gurugram roof is hard on a tank. Afternoons pass 45°C in May and June, and water sitting in a sunlit tank warms through. Warm water with a little light getting in through a loose lid is where algae starts, and by the monsoon it shows as a green or brown film on the walls. Pigeons sit on tank lids, and on homes near the Aravalli edge along Golf Course Extension Road and Sohna Road, residents often report monkeys lifting lids that aren't clamped down.
Clean the roof tanks every 6 months on GMDA water, and every 3 to 4 months if tubewell or tanker water goes in too. April, before the heat, and late September, after the rains, suit most homes. If the house has a sump, clean it first in the same visit (Underground Tank (Sump) Cleaning in Gurugram).

Your tank's size: look for the number moulded on a plastic tank, usually near the top. For a concrete tank, measure inside length × width × depth in feet and multiply by 28.3.
Heat, algae, lids and monkeys: what to check
- Lid fit. A lid that sits loose lets in dust, light and mosquitoes. A clamp or screw-down lid, and a strap where monkeys visit, is a small cost. We photograph each lid and tell you if it needs replacing; lid clamps and overflow mesh are quoted separately.
- The overflow pipe. Without a mesh on the end, mosquitoes breed inside the tank, which matters in Gurugram's June-to-December dengue season (Mosquito Control in Gurugram).
- Pigeons. Droppings around the tank wash in with the first rain. Netting keeps birds off the terrace.

What cleaning changes, and what it doesn't
Cleaning takes out the sludge on the floor, the algae and the slimy film on the walls, and disinfects the inside before it refills. It doesn't change what's dissolved in the water. Gurugram's municipal supply runs at about 250 to 300 ppm TDS, according to a household study published by India Water Portal, and groundwater carries far more: PHED data reported in 2018 found TDS above 3,000 mg/L at some locations. In the same study, 86% of households had an RO purifier. Keep using yours for drinking water after the clean; a clean tank also sends less silt to its pre-filter.
