How to find your tank's size

  • Plastic tanks usually have the capacity printed on the side or the lid: 500, 750, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000 litres.
  • Box-shaped concrete tanks: measure the inside length, width and depth in feet, multiply them, then multiply by 28.3. For example, 5 × 4 × 4 ft = 80 cubic feet ≈ 2,264 litres.
  • Round tanks without a label: send us a photo with a person or a door next to it for scale, and we'll tell you.

Not sure? Send a photo on WhatsApp; we'll confirm the price before booking.

Plastic water tanks in India are made to a BIS standard (IS 12701) for rotational-moulded polyethylene tanks. A scratched inner surface gives algae and sludge more to grip, which is why we don't use wire brushes or harsh scrapers on plastic.

Signs your roof tank needs cleaning

  • Cloudy, yellow or smelly water, worst first thing in the morning
  • Sediment at the bottom of a bucket after it stands
  • Green algae or a slimy film when you open the lid (sun on a roof tank warms the water and speeds algae up)
  • Silt after the monsoon, when the supply carries more mud
  • Slimy tap aerators
  • More than six months since the last clean, or nobody knows when it was

How often depends on your water: about every 6 months on Delhi Jal Board or municipal supply, every 3 to 6 months on borewell, and about every 3 months on tanker water. Water Tank Cleaning →

How we clean an overhead tank

Every overhead tank gets the same 9 steps as all AHC tank cleans: inspect, drain, remove sludge by hand, pressure-wash, hand-scrub walls, corners and lid, vacuum out the loosened dirt, disinfect, rinse, and send photos. For a tank of up to 2,000 litres, one trained technician takes about 60 to 90 minutes.

Roof access and safety

  • We need access to the roof or terrace, including keys to a locked terrace door, and a safe way up: a fixed staircase or a secure ladder.
  • On sloping or unfenced roofs, the technician goes up only where there is safe access; we'll tell you on the call.
  • Tanks on raised stands or above the stair room need a ladder; tell us the height when you book.
  • The lid is checked: a cracked or loose lid lets in dust, birds and mosquitoes, and we'll show you in the photos.

Before, after, not included

Before we arrive

  • Store water for a few hours (buckets, a second tank)
  • Switch off the motor so it doesn't run dry or pump into an empty tank
  • Make sure the terrace is unlocked and the inlet and outlet valves can be reached
  • Tell us your water source: Delhi Jal Board, borewell or tanker

After the clean

  • Let the tank refill fully before use
  • Run the taps for a short while before drinking water straight from the tap
  • Keep the lid closed and put a mesh on the overflow pipe
  • Book the next clean on the interval for your water source

Not included

  • Tank repair, crack sealing or replacing the lid
  • Plumbing, valves, the motor or the float switch
  • Water testing in a lab
  • Moving or replacing a tank

Overhead tank cleaning: your questions

How much does overhead tank cleaning cost?
₹699 for a tank of up to 1,000 litres, ₹999 up to 2,000 litres and ₹1,499 up to 5,000 litres, including GST. 365-plan members get ₹149 off each extra tank in the same visit.
Can you clean a 500 or 750-litre tank?
Yes, at the up-to-1,000-litre price, ₹699.
Will cleaning scratch my plastic tank?
No. We use soft brushes and non-scratch pads on plastic, never wire brushes or scrapers.
Do I need to empty the tank before you come?
No. Store a few hours of water and switch off the motor; we drain the tank.
How long does it take?
About 60 to 90 minutes for a tank of up to 2,000 litres.
Is the water safe to drink after cleaning?
Let the tank refill fully and run the taps for a while first. Cleaning removes sludge, algae and the slimy film; it doesn't change minerals in the water, so keep using a purifier for drinking.
Chhat ki tanki kitne din mein saaf karwani chahiye?
Delhi Jal Board ka paani: har 6 mahine. Borewell: 3 se 6 mahine. Tanker: har 3 mahine. Best time: April aur September.
