NIT homes: what we see

NIT was laid out as the New Industrial Township after Partition, when more than 50,000 refugees were resettled in Faridabad under Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay's leadership. People still name its parts by number, NIT 1, 2, 3 and 5, and the head post office for PIN 121001 is the Faridabad NIT Head Office. Many of the original single-plot houses have since been rebuilt over several floors.

Winter air here can be among the city's worst. On a GRAP-III morning in November 2024, NIT's monitoring station read AQI 354, the highest of Faridabad's stations that day. Dust settles on sills, grilles and fans within days, so a Home Refresh (2BHK ₹1,999) more than once between November and January is worth considering.

Shop below, home above

A typical NIT shop-house has a shop, store or small workshop at street level and one or two households above, sharing the stair, the drain line and sometimes the kitchen wall. Cockroaches breed where there's food, warmth and cardboard: the shop's storeroom, a tea counter, a packing area. When only the upstairs flat is treated, they come back up the stairwell and the plumbing.

Shop first, before it opens. Gel under counters and shelves, spray along the shutter line, the back door and the drain. Commercial rate: ₹1–2 per sq ft per service, minimum 800 sq ft; a smaller shop is quoted after we see it.

Drains, rain and pests

On 7–8 August 2026, The Tribune named Neelam–BK Road among more than 50 waterlogged roads in the city, along with Sanjay, Jawahar and Dabua colonies. After a two-day spell in August 2024, an NIT resident told the paper that every underpass had flooded, and civic sources said almost half of the city's drain and sewage network was choked or damaged.

Blocked drains matter for pests as much as for traffic. Cockroaches live in the drain lines between joined buildings, and rats use them as corridors from one shop-house to the next. After heavy rain:

Book mosquito treatment within two weeks (2BHK ₹1,599), when the water trapped on flat roofs, cooler trays and pots starts breeding.
Expect cockroaches to come up through floor traps; a cap and a gel treatment deal with most of it.

Water in NIT

NIT gets Faridabad's municipal supply, drawn from Ranney wells on the Yamuna bed and MCF tubewells. Summer is hard: in 2024 an NIT-zone resident told The Tribune that households were spending 50 to 100 rupees a day on bottled water.

Older NIT houses usually have more than one roof tank, because a tank was added each time a floor went up, and some have a sump at ground level. Some of these tanks may not have been opened in years, and an old tank left that long usually holds a layer of silt and a dark film on the walls.

Municipal supply only: clean every tank about every six months.
Tankers or a submersible part of the year: every three to four months.

A clean tank keeps what you store clean. It won't change the supply or what's in the water when it reaches you.
