Water in Defence Colony

Delhi Jal Board's Summer Action Plan for 2026 lists Defence Colony's supply as two windows a day: 4 to 7 am and 5 to 7 pm, five hours in all. The same plan, for the Kasturba Nagar constituency, shows no DJB tankers deployed there. In practice, a Defence Colony house lives on what it stores in those hours, usually in an underground sump that a motor lifts to the tank on the roof.

Stored water sits for most of the day, and over months it leaves silt on the floor of the sump and a slippery film on the tank walls. For a house that relies on two short fills, we'd suggest cleaning the sump and the roof tank together every six months.

Timing matters here. Book a slot that starts after the morning fill has been used and finishes well before 5 pm, so the sump is ready for the evening supply; keep a few buckets aside for the hours in between. A sump takes two technicians and three hours or more. Sumps cost ₹1,199 up to 1,500 litres, ₹1,499 up to 3,000 and ₹1,999 up to 5,000; roof tanks ₹699 up to 1,000 litres and ₹999 up to 2,000, all including GST; 365-plan members get ₹149 off each extra tank.

A clean deals with what has settled inside your tank. It can't change the supply or what arrives through the line, so if your tap water ever looks or smells wrong, report it to DJB on 1916 first and book the clean once the supply runs clear. Sixty years of the colony, and what that means indoors

Defence Colony was established in 1960 on land that had belonged to Kotla Mubarakpur village, to resettle officers whose homes were now across the new border. The colony's welfare association, the DCWA, has worked from the Gumti of Shaikh Ali, an old tomb on the roundabout near the market, since that same year.

Age shows up in a house in predictable places. Wood that has stood for six decades is where termites and wood borer do their damage: the bottom of a door frame that touches the floor, the back of an almirah set into a wall, a wooden staircase rail. A free inspection tells you which it is, because termites leave mud tubes and hollow wood while borer leaves small round holes and fine powder.

When a plot is rebuilt, the problems change. New floors come with modular kitchens, shared plumbing between levels and several tanks side by side on one roof. Cockroaches then travel between kitchens through the pipe runs, so a treatment works best when every floor books in the same week.

Finding your house: four roads and a tomb

Defence Colony has clear edges: the Ring Road on the south, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg on the east, Bhishma Pitamah Marg on the west and the Ring Railway on the north, with Sewa Nagar railway station to the north-east and Kotla Mubarakpur next door. Inside, the roundabout with the Gumti, beside Defence Colony market, is the easiest landmark to give.

Lajpat Nagar station (Violet and Pink lines) is the nearest metro, and South Extension (Pink line) is closer for some parts of the colony.
