Underground water tank (sump) cleaning in Delhi.

In a Delhi kothi or builder floor, the Delhi Jal Board's water lands in the sump first, and so does whatever a tanker or borewell brings. We clean underground tanks under driveways, stilt parking and stairs across Delhi, always with two technicians, and send photos of the sump floor before and after.

  • Two technicians, every sump
  • At least 3 hours a sump
  • Photos of the floor, not just the walls
  • Fixed price incl. GST

Typical Delhi sumps: a DDA-era single-storey house often has a small sump of 1,500 to 3,000 litres; a rebuilt four-floor builder building usually shares one larger sump, 5,000 to 10,000 litres, feeding four roof tanks; a large South Delhi kothi can have 10,000 litres or more. To work out yours: inside length × width × depth in feet × 28.3. A sump 8 × 5 × 5 ft is 200 cubic feet, about 5,660 litres (₹2,799).

Sumps in Delhi: what to know

Delhi Jal Board water arrives at set hours and often at low pressure, too low to reach a roof tank on its own. That's why most Delhi kothis and builder floors have a sump: the water flows into the underground tank, and a motor lifts it to the tanks on the roof. It also means the sump receives everything first. Treated DJB water leaves a fine silt and a slimy film on the walls; tanker water, which many colonies rely on in May and June, often carries visible mud; and borewell water in most of Delhi is brackish, leaving white scale and fine sediment. The sump collects all three, which is why its floor is usually the dirtiest surface in a home's water system.

Delhi sumps are also easy to forget. In builder floors rebuilt from old kothis, the sump is often under the stilt parking, with a cover beneath a parked car; in older houses it may be under the stairs or the front driveway, sometimes with the cover tiled or painted over. When four families share one sump, nobody owns the job, and buyers of a new floor rarely know when it was last opened. If you can't remember, it's due.

Clean the sump and the roof tank together, sump first. If only the roof tank is cleaned, the first fill brings the sump's sludge straight back up.

Tell us the DJB supply hours in your lane, so we drain the sump after the day's supply and refill it at the next one.

How we work in a sump

A sump is a confined space: one opening, little air and, after weeks closed, sometimes stale or harmful air. Most deaths in confined spaces are people who went in to help someone else. So we never send one person alone: one technician works inside, one stays at the opening throughout, and the sump is opened and ventilated before anyone enters. Then the 9 steps: inspect, drain, shovel out the sludge, pressure-wash, scrub walls, corners and the underside of the cover, vacuum, disinfect, rinse, and photos on WhatsApp. Full safety and process: Underground tank cleaning →

Source: NIOSH (1986): about 60% of confined-space fatalities were would-be rescuers.

After waterlogging: clean the sump before you use it

Many Delhi colonies flood in a heavy monsoon downpour, and a sump cover at ground level is the lowest point in the house. If street water has stood over the cover, assume it has got in: don't drink or cook with the water, run it out, and book a sump clean once the lane has drained. Check the cover's rim and seal while it's open; a cracked rim lets floodwater, and sometimes drain water, back in.
