A shared roof: four 1,000-litre tanks on a four-floor builder building, cleaned in one visit: 4 × ₹699 = ₹2,796 including GST, ₹699 a floor, in a single trip up the stairs. For 365-plan members: ₹699 + 3 × ₹550 = ₹2,349. Source: AHC price book, 6 Oct 2026.
Roof tanks in Delhi: what to know
In most Delhi homes, the roof tank is the one you actually drink, cook and bathe from. Delhi Jal Board water reaches it by motor, usually from a sump, and when supply runs short in summer the tank is filled from a tanker or a borewell instead. Each source leaves something: a fine silt and slimy film from DJB water, mud from tankers, and white scale from Delhi's brackish groundwater. Over a few months, a layer settles on the tank floor and the motor stirs it back up every time it runs.
Delhi roofs are shared more than most. On a rebuilt builder floor, each floor owner has a tank, sometimes two, on the common terrace, and the terrace itself often belongs to the top floor and stays locked. On DDA blocks in Janakpuri, Mayur Vihar or Vasant Kunj, each flat's tank sits in a row above the stairwell. In older kothis, an RCC tank built into the roof can hold 2,000 litres or more, with a small manhole that only one person fits through. Booking every tank on the roof together saves a second trip up the stairs, and 365-plan members get ₹149 off each extra tank.
Most of these buildings have no lift to the roof, so we carry the pump and hoses up the stairs. Tell us the floor, whether the terrace is locked and who has the key.

| DDA flats block | A row of 500 to 1,000 L tanks over the stairwell | Access through the top-floor landing; your tank marked |
| Older kothi | An RCC tank of 2,000 to 5,000 L, often with plastic ones added | Manhole cover free; ladder access |
| Independent house with sump | One or two roof tanks | Book the sump too |

Your tank's size: it's moulded on the side of most plastic tanks, often near the top. For a concrete tank, measure inside length × width × depth in feet and multiply by 28.3.
Lids, pigeons and the June heat
- Lids. A missing or cracked lid is the most common way dirt gets in. On Delhi roofs, pigeons perch on tanks, and near the Ridge monkeys can knock loose lids off. We'll photograph the lid and tell you if it needs replacing; a lid that clamps or screws shut is worth the small cost. Lid clamps and overflow mesh can be quoted on the visit.
- Pigeons. Droppings around an open tank wash in with the next rain. Bird netting keeps them off the terrace.
- The June heat. In May and June, water standing in a roof tank in the Delhi sun comes out hot, and warm, still water with light getting in is where algae grows. A green film on the walls or a smell after the monsoon means it's time to clean, and an opaque tank with a tight lid keeps light out. Clean in April, before the heat, and again after the monsoon in late September.
