Roof tanks in Noida: what to know
Noida's older sectors, roughly 14 to 37, the 40s and 50s and 55 and 56, are mostly plotted: kothis, independent houses and, more and more, builder floors. These homes typically keep their own roof tank, filled by a motor from a sump or straight from the Authority line, and the family owns the job of cleaning it. Houses in Greater Noida's lettered sectors, such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta, work the same way.
High-rise Noida is different. In a tower in Noida Extension, the Sector 70s or on the Expressway, the terrace tanks serve the whole tower and belong to the society, run by the AOA or the builder's maintenance agency. If your water looks wrong in a society flat, tell the maintenance office and point them to the society tank page.
A Noida roof is hard on a plastic tank. In May and June the water comes out hot, and warm water with light leaking in round a loose lid grows algae, which shows as a green or brown film by the end of the monsoon. Clean about every 6 months on Authority supply alone, and every 3 to 6 months with borewell or tanker water. Not sure of the capacity? Plastic tanks carry it in raised figures on the body. For a concrete one, take the inside length, width and depth in feet, multiply them, then multiply by 28.3: a 5 × 4 × 3.5 ft tank is 70 cubic feet, about 1,981 litres, so it's priced at ₹999.
October, the canal closure and your roof tank
Much of Noida's piped water is Ganga water from the Upper Ganga Canal, blended with Ranney-well and tubewell water. Each October the canal is shut for its annual cleaning. In 2024 it closed on the night of 12 October and reopened on 2 November, about three weeks, and Noida ran on groundwater with an expected shortfall of about 60 MLD even with tubewells at full capacity.
For a roof tank, that means a few weeks of harder water and more sediment. Reported TDS in Noida runs from about 100 for Ganga water to up to 300 for Ranney-well water and above 1,500 for tubewell water in some areas near the Expressway and in the 70s sectors. If you clean in October, book after the canal water returns, so the clean tank doesn't refill with the year's heaviest water; for many families that lands just before Diwali. Check the Authority's notice for this year's dates.
Cleaning removes sludge, algae and the slimy film; it doesn't change what's dissolved in the water. Keep using your purifier for drinking water; a clean tank just sends it less silt.

Lids, overflow pipes and the dengue season
Gautam Buddh Nagar recorded 207 dengue cases and 56 malaria cases from January to 1 October 2026, with anti-larval spraying under way, and the season runs into November. A roof tank breeds mosquitoes only if they can reach the water, so check two things:
- The lid should sit tight or clamp shut. We photograph each one and tell you if it's cracked; replacing lids isn't part of the clean; lid clamps are quoted separately.
- The overflow pipe needs a fine mesh tied over its open end; we can quote for fitting one.
