When the power goes, the roof tank is all you have

On 8 September 2026, a shutdown planned for four hours to replace an 11 kV breaker ran to about seven and a half across Nehru Nagar Second A, B and E, Malliwara, Dinagarhi, Jethwara, the Old Bus Adda and Sabzi Mandi. Over 50,000 people were affected, and many households ran out of water because their motors couldn't pump. There were two- to three-hour cuts in Nehru Nagar in July too, and on 5 September the power went off and on at least ten times.

In a house on municipal supply, the sump fills when the water comes and the motor lifts it to the roof. When the power is off, the roof tank is the only water you have. Three habits help:

Keep the roof tank big enough for a day and top it up whenever power and supply line up.
Clean it every six months. Sludge at the bottom takes up space and gets stirred up when the level drops low, which is exactly when you're relying on it.
Clean the sump with it. A sump that has taken in rainwater sends the same dirt up to the roof.

A tank clean removes sludge, scrubs the walls and disinfects the tank. It doesn't make up for a supply shortfall or change the water's TDS.

Next to the old-city markets

Nehru Nagar shares its power feeders, and its lanes, with the old city: Malliwara, the Sabzi Mandi, the Old Bus Adda, Ambedkar Road and Ghantaghar are all close. Nehru Nagar was waterlogged on 31 July 2025, had more than a foot of water with drains overflowing between 7 and 9 July 2026, and was waterlogged again in Second and Third on 7 August and on 5 September 2026.
