Treat cockroaches 10 days before the Diwali frying starts, not after

Published 24 Oct 2026 · 6 min read

Quick answer

Get the cockroach treatment done 10 days before the festival cooking starts, so for Diwali on 8 November, by about 27 October. Gel bait is slow: cockroaches eat it, go back to their hiding spots and die over 7 to 14 days. Once the kitchen fills with oil, sweets and crumbs, they have other food, and you can't empty the cabinets for a treatment anyway.

In most Delhi NCR kitchens, Diwali frying starts two or three days before the festival. Mathri, namak pare, shakarpare and gujiya for the family and for gifting, then pakode for the guests. For a week, the kitchen is warm, oily, full of open food and busy until midnight. It is also exactly when families call us about cockroaches running across the platform.

Treating cockroaches in that week is the wrong way round. The treatment that works best in a kitchen, odourless gel bait, needs a week or more to work, and it needs the cockroaches to be hungry. Here is why the timing matters, and how to fit it into the fortnight before Diwali.

Why the treatment has to go in before the frying

Cockroach gel has to be eaten, and it works slowly. The University of California's IPM guide on cockroaches notes that most baits are slow-acting, that a bait programme may take 7 days or longer to show results, and that baits take longer to work when other food is available.

Put those three facts next to a Diwali kitchen:

  • Time. The gel needs 7 to 14 days. Ten days before the frying gives it that time.
  • Competition. During the festival there is oil on the stove, sugar syrup on the counter and crumbs in every drawer. A cockroach with that much food takes longer to find the bait.
  • Access. A technician needs empty cabinets and drawers to place gel properly. Nobody can empty a kitchen that is cooking for 20 guests.

There is a fourth reason. Cockroaches that eat gel go back into the hinge, crack or motor space where they hide and die there, and others sharing that hiding spot can pick up the bait from their droppings and remains. That is why the colony thins out over days rather than hours, and why a quiet kitchen in late October is the best time for it.

The countdown for Diwali 2026

Diwali is on Sunday, 8 November, and Dhanteras on Friday, 6 November. Most families start the heavy frying around 4 to 6 November.

If you plan to scrub the kitchen for the festival, do the heavy scrubbing first. Degreasers and wiping undo gel. After the treatment, wipe only the platform and food surfaces and leave the gel dots alone.

How to prepare the kitchen (about 1 hour, the night before)

  1. Empty the cabinets and drawers to be treated (30 minutes). Utensils, dabbas and dry ration go into cartons on the dining table or in another room. Leave the cabinet doors open.
  2. Clear under and behind the fridge and the gas (10 minutes). Pull the fridge out a little if it moves easily. The motor area at the back is warm and is one of the first places cockroaches settle.
  3. Note where you've seen them (5 minutes). The sink cabinet, the chimney, the microwave, the switchboard, the bathroom drain. Tell the technician; it saves inspection time.
  4. Stop using shop sprays a few days before. UC IPM notes that sprays can repel cockroaches and scatter them to other places. A sprayed hinge is also a hinge where they won't touch bait.
  5. Put away pet bowls and children's things from the kitchen (5 minutes).

What the technician does on the day (45–60 minutes)

Our technicians start with a torch inspection of the kitchen and bathrooms, looking for droppings that look like ground coffee, egg cases, and the musty smell of a hiding spot. Then:

  • Gel dots, the size of a grain of rice, inside cabinet hinges, drawer runners, cabinet corners, under the platform, behind the gas pipe, around the chimney and near the fridge motor. We use fipronil 0.05% gel, CIB&RC-registered and used as per the label. It is odourless, so there's no smell when you cook.
  • A crack-and-crevice spray in drains, sink traps, pipe entries and along the skirting, not across floors or on the platform.
  • The bathrooms and drains, because cockroaches move between the kitchen and the bathrooms through the plumbing and shafts.

The gel sits inside cracks, so the kitchen can be used after about 2 hours with the windows open, once the sprayed areas are dry. Wipe the platform before cooking and put things back.

The 10 days in between: what to do and what not to do

Do: - Clear crumbs, wipe the platform and cover food every night, so the gel is the easiest meal in the kitchen. - Close the sink drain with a cover overnight. - Sweep up dead cockroaches daily. Seeing more of them in the open during the first 3 to 5 days is normal: sick cockroaches come out of hiding.

Don't: - Wipe hinges, drawer runners or cabinet corners with phenyl, bleach or degreaser. That removes the gel. - Use a shop aerosol spray, chalk or a "bomb" fogger. NC State University's research found total-release foggers don't control German cockroaches, because the fog doesn't reach where they hide, while raising pesticide levels inside the home many times over. - Put old newspaper back on the shelves. Paper and cardboard are hiding places.

If you're already late

If the frying starts in less than a week, treat anyway. The gel will still be working through the festival, and the numbers will fall by Bhai Dooj. Keep the mithai and namkeen in sealed steel or glass containers, and keep the gel away from where you'll be rolling dough.

If the kitchen is already full of festival food and you can't empty cabinets, the honest option is to wait until after Bhai Dooj (11 November), when the kitchen quietens down, and treat then. A half-done treatment around full cabinets misses the hiding spots and gives you a worse result for the same price.

When to call a professional, and what AHC's cockroach control includes

Shop gel and a clean kitchen can keep a few cockroaches down. Call a professional when you see them in daylight, in the microwave or switchboards, or when they come back within weeks of your own attempts. Those are signs of a colony living in the hinges, motor spaces and shafts, where DIY rarely reaches. Our article on why cockroaches come back explains the egg cases and shared shafts behind repeat infestations.

If cockroaches are still active 2 to 4 weeks after the treatment, we come back for a free revisit*. A German cockroach egg case holds about 30 young and takes about a month to hatch, according to UC IPM, so a single visit rarely ends it in a heavily infested home. That is what the revisit window is for: if young ones from surviving egg cases keep turning up after 2 to 4 weeks, call us. Book on the cockroach control page. If there is an infant or a pregnancy at home, read our note on pest control safety with kids, pets and pregnancy first and tell us when you book.

FAQ

How many days before Diwali should I do cockroach pest control?
About 10 to 14 days before the festival cooking starts. For Diwali on 8 November 2026, that means by around 27 October. Gel bait takes 7 to 14 days to work through a colony, and it works best in a quiet, clean kitchen, not one full of festival food.
Can I cook in the kitchen after cockroach gel treatment?
Yes. The odourless gel is placed inside hinges, drawer runners and cracks, away from food surfaces. Once the crack-and-crevice spray in drains and along the skirting is dry, after about 2 hours with the windows open, wipe the platform and cook as normal.
Why am I seeing more cockroaches after the treatment?
For the first 3 to 5 days, cockroaches that have eaten the bait come out of hiding, slower and in daylight. It means the gel is working. Sweep them up, don't spray, and don't wipe the gel spots. Sightings should drop clearly by the second week.
Should I scrub the kitchen before or after cockroach treatment?
Before. Degreasers, phenyl and wiping remove gel from hinges and cabinet corners. Do any heavy festival scrubbing first, then have the treatment done. Afterwards, wipe only the platform and food surfaces, and leave the gel dots in hinges and corners alone.
