A kitchen gets treated, cockroaches disappear for a few weeks, and then one evening they are back behind the stove. It is one of the most common complaints people have about pest control, and it usually does not mean the treatment failed. It means the cockroach life cycle is longer than most people expect.
Eggs survive the treatment
A female cockroach carries her eggs in a small, hard case that protects them from most sprays and gels. If eggs were laid before the treatment, they can still hatch 30 to 60 days afterward, and the young cockroaches grow into adults over the following weeks. The full cycle from egg to breeding adult runs roughly 3 to 4 months.
So a treatment kills what is active and feeding on the day it happens. Eggs already in place are largely untouched. A few weeks later, a new batch hatches, and from the homeowner's point of view it looks exactly like the cockroaches never left.
Shared shafts and drains keep reintroducing them
In apartment buildings, cockroaches do not stay inside one flat's walls. They travel through:
- Shared plumbing shafts that run vertically through multiple floors
- Drain pipes connected between the kitchen and bathroom, and sometimes between flats
- Common walls and the gaps where pipes pass through them
- Shared garbage areas and stairwells, especially in older buildings
This means even a perfectly treated flat can see new cockroaches arrive from a neighbouring unit, a dirty shaft, or an untreated common area. It is one reason society-wide pest control, where multiple flats are treated together, tends to work better than any single flat treating alone.
Prep mistakes that undo a treatment
How a home is prepared before and after a visit changes how well the treatment works.
- Spraying shop-bought insecticide before the visit. This scatters cockroaches deeper into cracks and walls, and many sprays repel cockroaches away from gel bait, making the professional treatment less effective when it happens.
- Wiping away the gel dots. The small gel placements are meant to stay in place for cockroaches to find and eat over several days. Cleaning them off right after the visit removes the ongoing effect.
- Deep cleaning the kitchen immediately before the visit. The technician needs to see where cockroaches are hiding; an overly tidy kitchen can hide the signs that guide where treatment is focused.
- Leaving dishes unwashed overnight repeatedly, or food in open containers, which gives cockroaches a reason to keep coming back regardless of how good the treatment was.
- Not mentioning shared drains or a neighbouring flat's known infestation, which means the technician cannot account for a likely reinfestation source.
Avoiding spraying for a week before and after a professional visit, leaving gel placements undisturbed, and letting the technician see the kitchen as it normally looks all help the treatment do its job properly.
Quarterly treatment breaks the cycle
Because the full life cycle runs 3 to 4 months, a treatment repeated every 3 months catches each new generation before it is old enough to lay its own eggs. A single annual treatment leaves a 9 month gap where several generations can hatch, grow and breed undisturbed. This is the reasoning behind scheduling pest control every quarter rather than once a year, and it is why plans such as Shield 365 are built around 4 scheduled visits.

Habits that help between visits
A good treatment does most of the work, but a few habits at home slow down how fast cockroaches can rebuild a population:
- Wash dishes before bed, or at minimum leave them soaking in soapy water rather than dry with food residue.
- Keep food, including pet food, in sealed containers rather than open bags or bowls.
- Fix dripping taps and damp spots under sinks; cockroaches need water more consistently than food.
- Cover drains at night, especially floor drains in the kitchen and bathroom.
- Take garbage out every evening rather than letting it sit overnight.
- Seal visible gaps around pipes where they pass through walls or under sinks.
When to call for another visit
If cockroaches are seen during the day rather than only at night, it usually means a large population is active and hiding nearby, which is a sign to book a treatment rather than wait. If you are on a quarterly plan and see activity between scheduled visits, a free call-back is included rather than waiting for the next scheduled date.
